defunensemble is an electro-acoustic group founded in 2009. It comprises pianist Emil Holström, cellist Markus Hohti, clarinetist Mikko Raasakka, harpist Lily-Marlene Puusepp and flutist Hanna Kinnunen. Composer Sami Klemola coordinates the group’s operation, and Marko Myöhänen and Timo Kurkikangas serve as experts on music technology. All members of the group are active in the field of new Finnish music.
defunensemble organises electro-acoustic workshops and concerts. Collaboration with composers is a central part of the operation of the group. Pieces commissioned by the ensemble are developed in the common workshops of the composers, the musicians and music technologists. The goal is to develop the use of electro-acoustic techniques in compositions and to create a tight cooperation between all the people who contribute to the performance.
In 2009 defunensemble organised two concerts, which featured music by Sami Klemola, Pierre Boulez, Ivan Fedele, Perttu Haapanen and Juhani Nuorvala. The November concert also featured a cooperation project with the experimental electro-acoustic association, Koelse. It is a collective of artists, who build electronic instruments out of electronics junk.
Janne Tuomi

Janne Tuomi – percussion
Brought up in a family of musicians, Janne Tuomi started to play the piano already at the age of six, but was soon drawn to percussions. After studying at the Tampere Conservatoire, he continued his studies at the Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark. After receiving his diploma he moved to Los Angeles, where he studied with John Bergamo and Brad Dutz. His diploma concert was held in 2006, namely at Tampere Biennale.
Tuomi has worked in the fields of free jazz and classical music, and he is remembered from the unprejudiced ensemble Circle, which defines itself as avant-rock. He also gives private lessons, and teaches at the Palmgren Conservatoire in Pori.
Jori Hulkkonen

With a DJ career spanning over 15 years, ten albums to his name, dozens of other publications for the hottest labels, almost a hundred remixes, a 10-year-old radio show, thousands of DJ gigs around the world, songs composed for international artists, a synthesizer orchestra of his own…electronic music wizard, producer Jori Hulkkonen is without question the most internationally renowned Finnish DJ.
Hulkkonen published his tenth album, Man From Earth, in the autumn of 2009 on Canadian label Turbo, after his trademark label F Communications closed. The new album and the new label have brought Hulkkonen from the electronic world of techno, house and acid a bit more closer to the pop mainstream. Nevertheless, in addition to his energetic dance/house DJ set Hulkkonen plays an improvised live remix of Kimmo Hakola’s Piano Concerto (1996).
