Five festival days and seventeen wonderful events are behind us today. Approximately 2,500 people attended the festival this year and the Tune In -showcase was a great success – despite the unfortunate travel difficulties caused by the volcano eruption.

We’d like to give huge thanks to all of our artists, composers, guests, staff, partners and of course everyone who came to our concerts!

 

Despite the erupting volcanos Tampere Biennale has been a success and the festival audience has experienced four days of today’s best Finnish contemporary music. The grande finale takes place today at 1pm at Telakka. The Electro-acoustic Afternoon premieres Paola Livorsi’s composition Âkâsh, which is commissioned by Tampere Biennale. The afternoon goes on with performances from defunenseble and students from Tampere Polytechnic. The second floor of Telakka turns into an exhibition room where you’ll find comtemporary video art by Sami van Ingen, Pirjetta Brander and the Pink Twins.

Two premieres, an amazing Italian mini-opera for flute and voice, the young artist of year 2010 and a world-class DJ Jori Hulkkonen remixing new contemporary music live. What more could you ask from a festival Saturday? Oh yes, an amazing string quartet Jousia playing a commission work by Tapio Tuomela, a family day at the Tampere Art Museum and highly acclaimed defunensemble performing Magnus Lindberg’s experimental music on a club stage. Don’t miss out on the last concerts in Tampere Hall and the last Electron Club at Klubi!

Yesterday’s festival opening was a success and today the going gets even more sizzly. The second festival day starts with Helsinki Guitar Duo’s lunch concert at Telakka at noon. Among other great compositions, the concert features a premiere of Juha T. Koskinen’s Une fête chez M. de Saint-Fond.

At 5pm is time for TampereRaw’s performance at Telakka stage. TampereRaw consists of musicians from Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and it’s lead by conductor Tuomas Turriago.

The last concert before tonight’s Electron Club at Klubi is by two cellists, Marko Ylönen and Harri Österman, and pianist Martti Rautio at Tampere Hall’s Small Auditorium at 7pm.

After a day of ear-fondling tunes, it’s time to sit back and relax – and maybe even dance a bit - at the Electron Club, where Lubo-Mir, TURISTIT (Tourists) and Waisted Flanders cater us their most delicious melodies and the wickedest beats.

The festival begins with artist Lars Holmström’s Hommage à Nordgren -exhibition opening at Tampere Hall’s Winter Garden at 6pm. After the opening ceremonies we move to Small Auditorium to enjoy the magnificent sopranos of Anu and Piia Komsi. The themes of the poems used in the works of Kaija Saariaho, Usko Meriläinen, Tero Väänänen, Masi Tiitta and especially Biennale’s commission composer Heinz-Juhani Hofmann are definitely not easy – suicide, divorce, sex, rape, love, betrayal, grief… Tonight’s composers haven’t certainly been afraid of tackling taboos and the grim side of life. But with the power of music those feelings, even the difficult ones, can turn into positive energy for all of us.

After the concert there’s a free festival transportation to the Planetarium, where Jukka Mikkola takes us to a sound journey into space. The extraordinary and inspiring environment becomes part of the music itself in the Space Odyssey 2010.

Sopraanolle ja mezzosopraanolle sävelletty From the Grammar of Dreams on viidestä laulusta koostuva Sylvia Plathin teksteihin sävelletty kokonaisuus.

Per-Henrik Nordgren: Equilibrium Op. 94
Edesmenneen säveltäjälegendan, Pehr Henrik Nordgrenin sävellyksessä esiintyvä sana ”equilibrium” on englantia, ja se tarkoittaa sekä tasapaino(tila)a että asioiden punnitsemista, tasapainottelua eri katsantokantojen välillä.

Magnus Lindberg: Action-Situation-Signification
Magnus Lindberg tunnetaan nykyisin ennen muuta taiturillisesti kirjoitettujen ja upean hehkeäsointisten orkesteriteosten säveltäjänä, mutta hänelläkin on ollut oma nuoren vihaisen miehen kautensa.

Harri Suilamo: Yell - le Cri de Merlin?
Kuin kirkaisun synnyttämät kaiut kalliosolassa, huutoon liittyvät assosiaatioketjut risteilevät teoksen ympärillä: Merlinin, Munchin, Ginsbergin huudot – kaikki nekin joita emme koskaan kuule.

Erkki Kurenniemi: Antropoidien tanssi
Elektronisen musiikin pioneereihin kuuluvan Kurenniemen naivistisen minimalistinen teos, jossa tekno kohtaa mekaniikan.

Osmo Lindeman: Ritual
Edesmennyt Osmo Lindeman muistetaan elektroakustisen musiikin uranuurtajana. Vuonna 1972 julkaistu Ritual on yksi hänen maineikkaimpia teoksiaan.

Jarmo Sermilä: Electrocomposition I
Keskeinen instituutio suomalaisen elektroakustisen musiikin historiassa on ollut Yleisradion vuonna 1972 perustettu kokeilustudio. Sen ensimmäisenä taiteellisena johtajana toimi vuosina 1973 – 1979 Jarmo Sermilä. ElectroComposition 1 edustaa kokeilustudiota parhaimmillaan.

Jukka Tiensuu: Alma III: Soma
Tiensuun 1990-luvun orkesterituotannon suurin kokonaisuus on kolmesta itsenäisestä teoksesta rakentuva Alma-trilogia. Sen teokset ovat järjestyksessä Himo (Alma I) (1995), Lumo (Alma II) (1996) ja Soma (Alma III) (1998).
